Clean Water Projects

Clean water is essential to life. PRIDE's focus on clean water projects stems from the understanding that if water borne illnesses can be minimized or eliminated, children will be at school more and learning more, and adults will be better able to work, parent, and contribute to their communities.

Natural water springs are not uncommon in the rural mountains regions of Ethiopia where PRIDE is focusing its efforts. However when water from a spring is not well protected from sources of bacteria or pollution, it becomes a risk more than an asset.

Therefore PRIDE has made clean water a top priority in accomplishing its mission of furthering education in rural Ethiopia. Read on below to understand the process and how to get involved.

After:

PRIDE funded the completion of this much needed clean water system for the Embuyibad school, bringing clean water to over 900 school children their teachers.

Clean water projects just like this one have been completed at several other school villages where PRIDE is focused thanks to its donors and volunteers.

These clean water projects are only a $6,000- $10,000 investment that will benefit hundreds of school aged children by reducing sickness and death caused by water borne illnesses and diseases.

Healthy children attend school more regularly, have a greater capacity to learn, and matriculate more often. And healthy adults are better parents and more productive members of the societies in which they live.

Before:

This photograph was taken prior to the design and completion of the clean water station shown at left.

It is common to find these natural spring watering holes that are used for drinking, washing, bathing, and by animals, sometimes simultaneously.

With a total investment of only $6,000 - $10,000, PRIDE works with local laborers to excavate the spring by hand to access the water source, encapsulate the source with concrete, and install pipes and faucets.

The result: a more sanitary and accessible water source that meets the needs of the local residents for drinking water and washing.

Additional Completed Clean Water Features:

In addition to the clean water faucets pictured at the top of this page, additional clean water features are constructed on the same project site that can include a spill-over trough for animals (as seen in photo above) as well as separate hand-washing and clothes-washing stations.
